- Contention
- Normal broadband is a contended solution, sharing the bandwidth with up to 50 others. Although 8 Mbps may be possible at certain times of the day, there may be a reduction in throughput when children come home from school in the afternoon.
– The Fibre solution offered guarantees the stated bandwidth at all times. If 20 Mbps is provided then 20 Mbps is available for that office.
- Symmetrical Bandwidth
– Broadband is run over ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line). Download speeds can be up to 8 Mbps but upload speeds are far less at 1 Mbps.
– This can limit the ability to host conferencing, voice and video links. Video may require about 8 Mbps upload, although reducing quality can lead to a lower number. One Mpbs is not enough.
– The proposed Fibre connection at Pury Hill is symmetrical. A 20 Mbps connection means 20 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.
– When uploading data to an externally hosted website then these operations will perform 20 times faster than an ADSL broadband connection – 20 Mbps cf. 1 Mbps.
– The far greater upload speeds offered, gives the ability to serve other worldwide offices and staff working from home via VPN connections from Pury Hill.
- Response
– The time taken to route the internet packet over the wire to the appropriate website and return a result, can have a significant effect on the speed a web page may load. This is called the Round-Trip time.
– The fibre connection is hooked into a Tier 1 UK provider with a latency commitment of 20 milliseconds or less for the UK, and 95 milliseconds or less on Transatlantic Routes.
- Response times are crucial in providing good quality audio over the internet. VOIP solutions such as Skype work much better.
– In future, there may be scope to run all telephone connections over this class of service once BT have fully tested their 21CN network backbone.
- IP Addresses
– Most broadband providers only give a dynamic IP address.
– The Fibre Solution is delivered with Fixed Public IP addresses. This means that it will be possible to host services from Pury Hill.
